Imphal, April 19 2025:
Manipur is making significant strides in its education sector, with data collected by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation revealing impressive educational indicators that frequently surpass national averages.
However, these gains exist alongside persistent challenges that require attention to ensure equitable progress across the state's diverse regions and demographics.
In terms of literacy rates and gender advancement for individuals aged 7 year and above, the total gender gap for Manipur in literacy is 8.9 per cent, according to data in the recent 'Women and Men in India 2024: Selected Indicators and Data' .
This figure is notably lower than the all-India average of 14.4 per cent, outperforming several small and larger states.
In urban areas, female literacy is a striking success, reaching 91.4 per cent and surpassing male literacy at 86.3 per cent by 5.1 per cent.
This rare reversal of traditional gender trends underscores significant progress in female education.
However, rural areas show a gender gap of 9.5 per cent, indicating a need for focused efforts to improve access and opportunities for rural females.
Turning to youth literacy, the data reveals a bright spot for Manipur.
The literacy rate for the 15-24 age group has impressively climbed from 87.9 per cent in 2011 to 97.22 per cent in 2017, exceeding the national average of 94.31 per cent.
This leap reflects robust improvements in educational access and quality.
While the state has made significant strides, top-performing small states such as Goa (100 per cent) and Mizoram (99.95 per cent) serve as benchmarks for further progress.
The gender gap among youth has also narrowed, dropping from 4.74 per cent in 2011 to 3.35 per cent in 2017, demonstrating progress in equity.
The Gender Parity Index (GPI) further illustrates the state's advancements as it demonstrates a slight female advantage in enrolment, with GPI values of 1.04 in primary education, 1.05 in upper primary, and 1.04 in secondary levels.
In higher education, Manipur's GPI of 1.01 is close to the national average, indicating near parity.
These figures highlight a positive trend towards gender balance, and sustaining this progress requires continued efforts.
Encouraging female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields could further solidify these gains, particularly at higher secondary and tertiary levels.
The data highlights another strength in tertiary education teacher demographics with the state showing a high proportion of female teachers at 49.72 per cent, nearing gender parity and exceeding the national average of 41.59 per cent.
This balance is a commendable achievement, although disparities remain in senior roles.
Males dominate positions such as professor & equivalent, with 282 males compared to 111 females.
Internet usage among those aged 5 years and above is 21.6 per cent, above the national average of 17.6 per cent.
However, a gender gap is evident, with male usage at 26.7 per cent compared to female usage at 16.2 per cent.
The digital divide, particularly for females, presents a barrier to modern education and economic opportunities.
Expanding digital literacy programmes and improving internet infrastructure, especially in rural areas, could bridge this gap and enhance overall connectivity.
The rural gender gap in literacy, at 9.5 per cent, is an area requiring attention.
Initiatives such as scholarships, improved transportation, and community awareness campaigns could further boost female education in these areas.
In youth literacy, the gender gap has decreased to 3.35 per cent; achieving full parity and 100 per cent literacy will require sustained investment in quality education and skills training.
The underrepresentation of females in senior academic roles also requires attention, and mentorship and career advancement policies offer a pathway forward.
The female internet usage rate of 16.2 per cent indicates a need for targeted digital inclusion efforts, including infrastructure upgrades and education programmes.
Manipur's educational data illustrates a state on an upward trajectory, with notable achievements in urban female literacy, youth literacy gains, and near gender parity in teaching staff.
These successes place it ahead of national benchmarks in several areas.
However, the journey towards comprehensive educational equity needs to be sustained.
By addressing rural disparities, enhancing female representation in academia, and bridging the digital divide, the state can further build on its progress.
These efforts could not only elevate its own standards but also serve as a model for other Indian states striving for educational excellence.
According to the national data, India's educational landscape has significantly improved, with literacy rates rising from 43.57 per cent in 1981 to 77.7 per cent in 2017 .
The gender gap in literacy narrowed from 18.2 per cent in 2007-08 to 14.4 per cent in 2017-18, reflecting progress towards equality.
The Gross Enrolment Ratio for primary education has remained steady near 100 per cent, while higher education enrolment increased from 21.56 per cent to 28.4 per cent between 2012-13 and 2021-22 .
The Gender Parity Index also reached near-parity by 2021-22 across all levels.
These gains highlight national progress, but experts note that broad averages can obscure regional differences.
States such as Manipur, with above-average literacy, likely contribute to these trends, although detailed data is needed to address specific local challenges.
