Imphal, March 17 2026:
Highlighting the importance of Waishel Maril in preventing floods, the Environment Protection Unit (EPU), Manipur has announced that a 2nd phase of desilting the water channel will be taken up in the next month or two.
In a press release, EPU asserted that it started the 1 st phase of dredging Waisel Maril from April 11, 2025 from Kwakeithel Moirangpurel to Haobam Marak Chingtham Leikai, Pitambara School to Konjeng Leikai, Mongsangei Mayai Leikai Bamon Karak to Airport, Irom Meijrao area, Pukhrambam, Kha-Sanjenbam to Samushang etc.
EPU noted that despite the cleaning efforts, the channel gets blocked after a few months due to the disposal of plastic wastes, household wastes, toilet output etc.
EPU also stressed on the need to keep the Waisel Maril clean and free from blockages in order to prevent floods in Imphal West.
To improve the condition of this crucial water channel requires collective responsibility and concrete steps from the State Government.
Additionally, EPU has appealed the Government to dredge Naga Nala, Kongba River, Nambul River and other important channels of flowing water before the arrival of the rainy season as a preventive measure to protect from floods.
It has also urged the State administration to stop mass deforestation and instead take steps to promote reforestation in catchment areas.
