Imphal, November 15 2008:
DESPITE THE boycott, PHED Minister, T N Haokip inaugurated Rs 468 lakhs worth augmentation of water supply scheme at Senapati district headquarters this morning.
Reports reaching here said Naga People's Organization and Senapati District Students Association boycotted today's inaugural function of the water supply scheme in the district.
During the inaugural function, Minister Haokip promised that the required pipelines for further public distribution from the water supply units would be procured with the funds of Special Plan Assistance.
With today's inauguration, nearly 31,000 population residing in 15 villages located in and around the district headquarters are expected to get potable water.
The villages which would be benefitted by the water supply scheme under Taphou Naga unit include Taphou Naga, Taphou Pudunamei, Zaikari Katumai, Katumai centre, Rikhumai, Makeng Taphou, Taphou Phyamai, Taphou Kuki while habitations to be covered under Ekailongdi unit are Ekailongdi, Senapati and Makhrelui villages.
Mao-Karong water supply unit will cover Mao-Karong, Kathiko, Khabung Karong and Vakho villages, an official of PHED said.
Former Ministers, R K Theko and Francis Ngajokpa, Principal Secretary P C Lawmkunga and Chief Engineer of PHED Guruaribam Joychandra also attended the formal inauguration function held at the Taphou Naga village.
Mention may be made here that the construction works of the water supply scheme had started on September 11, 2004 and completed only yesterday.
