Chicks distributed, Director stresses on benefits of backyard poultry farming

Imphal, July 15 2019: Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, GoM distributed chicks to 142 beneficiaries at the office of Impahl East Joint Director today.

Speaking at the function, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Director Haobijam Chaoba said that the Department is providing 23 chicks to each beneficiary.

Maintaining that chicks are distributed for the past few years, he added that the chicks have been distributed under Imphal East District for Implementation of Rural Backyard Poultry Farming scheme for the year 2018-19 .

The chicks for backyard poultry belong to the rainbow rooster breed, he said and added that this particular breed are easy to raise/feed and requires minimal care.

Maintaining that the distribution will cover the who Imphal East district, he clarified that the distribution time has delayed a bit owing to the imposition of election code of conduct.

He conveyed that the chicks could not be supplied widely as the suppliers concerned only raise/keep only 4000-5000 chicks at a time and added that the department is planning to distribute the chicks to other districts very soon.

Narrating the idea behind backyard poultry farming, the officer said that a person/farmer raising too many chicks may face financial insufficiencies in order to feed them but if only 10 to 20 chicks are raised in a small area in the backyard then they can be raised easily with minimal input.

He said if 10 hen lays eggs out of the 20 then a minimum of 15 eggs can be expected and in turn the farmer can maintain the production properly in almost one and a half year.

This initiative will not only provide a source of income for the farmers but also broaden the business in the future, Chaoba said.

The total chicks to be distributed for Manipur is around 12,500 and over 12,050 will been distributed at hill districts, he informed.

Seven beneficiaries each from Tellou Chana Senjam Zilla Parishad, Sawombung ZP, Makeng Dolaithabi ZP, Khundrakpam ZP, Laipham Khunou ZP, Kairang Khomidok ZP, Khurai Nandeibam Leikai ZP, Khurai Chingangbam Leikai ZP, Top Naoriya ZP, Kshetrigao ZP, Bamonkampu ZP, Bashikhong ZP, Uchekon Nongchup ZP, Keirao Makting ZP, Tulihal ZP and Changamdabi ZP and 13 beneficiaries from Kontha Khabam ZP are included under Imphal East District for Implementation of Rural Backyard Poultry Farming scheme for the year 2018-19 .

Imphal East District Adhyaksha P Bimol, department officials, local representatives were present at the distribution function.
