135th Patriots' Day commemorated with patriotic fervour

Bishnupur/Thoubal, August 14 2026: The 135th Patriots' Day was observed at Various places in Manipur and Assam with solemn tributes to the heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 and programmes highlighting their sacrifice and contribution to the motherland.

At Moirang, the World Meetei Council (WMC) observed the occasion at Moirang Maibram Mandhop, with WMC-Manipur State Unit president Ph Basanta Singh presiding over the function.

The programme began with floral tributes and solemn homage to the brave heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri War who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

As part of the observance, a poetry recitation competition on the theme "Ema Leibak Amasung Athoubasingbu Seithaba" was organised for students from various relief camps in two categories, along with a cultural dance performance.

In Category A, comprising Classes I to VI, 43 students participated, while 31 students from Classes VII to XII took part in Category B.Winners were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates, while all participants were also given cash prizes as encouragement.

In addition, 28 students from 14 relief camps in the Moirang area who successfully cleared the HSLC Examination, 2026, were also felicitated with cash prizes, and certificates as encouragement.

The 135th Patriots' Day was also observed at Loyalam Public School, Moirang Khunou, organised by the Indigenous Development Mission (IDM) with the participation of students and staff.

The programme featured floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Students paid homage to the patriots by singing patriotic songs dedicated to the freedom fighters and reciting poems highlighting their legacy and contribution to the motherland.

In Thoubal, the Khorilol Loina Sinloi Lamjing Lup (KHOLSILAM), Khangabok, organised a village-level Manipuri poetry writing and recitation competition at Lamlong Diamond Club Community Hall, Khangabok Tangkha Leikai.

The gathering paid floral tributes to the portraits of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the motherland.

Students of Classes IX to XII participated in the poetry writing competition, while students of Classes V to VIII took part in the recitation competition.

Experts attending the programme also spoke to the students on the history of Manipur and the significance of remembering the sacrifices of the patriots.

Meanwhile, the Tekcham Sports and Cultural Organisation (TSCO) observed the Patriots' Day-cum-Annual Literary Meet, 2026, at Tekcham Laibung.

The observance, which began on Thursday, featured various competitions, including rhyme, poetry and patriotic song competitions.

Winners were felicitated with prizes and gifts.

In Guwahati, the occasion was observed at Manipuri Basti by Rajbari Club Guwahati.

The programme began with members of the Manipuri Basti Women Association singing patriotic songs, followed by a rally and floral tributes at the statue of Bir Tikendrajit at Rajbari.

MLA Central Guwahati Vijay Gupta, Kshetra Sangathan Mantri Dinesh Tiwari, RHG National general secretary Harendra Bora, UPF Manipur president Nongthombam Rupachandra, columnist Dr Ankita Dutta, Balen Beisha and Binita Dutta Choudhari, among others, attended the programme as presidium members.

Speakers recalled the events of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 and highlighted the courage, contributions and sacrifices of the patriots who fought for the motherland.
