Civil Servants to contribute towards food security in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, September 12, 2012: In an act of yeoman service to the society, the 2006-batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers has committed to contribute Rs.500 each towards food security of the people in Ukhrul district of Manipur.

The announcement on Wednesday came from Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul R.Sudhan, who belongs to 2006-batch of IAS, during his address as Chief Guest of the Distribution and Exhibition Day of Women Bread Winners' Union (WBWU) organised at Greenland Community Hall.

He stated that as part of their contribution to food security measures of the district, 89 members of 2006-batch of IAS, who are all recruited under Union Public service Commission (UPSC) and currently serving in different parts of the country, would contribute Rs.500 each from their respective salary.

Lauding the efforts of womenfolk in Ukhrul for their role in providing food security to the people, the Deputy Commissioner asked the WBWU to convert it into district-level society so as to have a wider reach to the people.

In this way, the women group can play greater role in food security measure by availing the contribution as assured from 2006-batch of IAS.

In response to the worldwide call for food security, WBWU was established in the month of August 2006 by more than 100 women farmers.

Since then, the union has been saving paddy through contributions amongst its members every year for sharing during lean season.

This year, more than 400 tins (mustard oil) of paddy grains were distributed among the members.

In return, the members contributed six tins each to the union's granary.

In addition, the women union also deals in recycling of plastic waste into usable items like baskets, bags, flower pots among others.

WBWU chairperson Veronica Zingkhai said the society's main objective is to provide food security through the novel initiative of womenfolk and infuse thrift awareness among the people.

The Chief Guest of the function was impressed by the efforts of women union and termed the initiative as 'what the nation wants,' prompted him to make the announcement that his batch of IAS officers would contribute towards food security in Ukhrul.
