RIMS likely to open eye bank

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World Sight Day 2026 today under the theme "Love Your Eyes" at the New OPD Block of the hospital.
The programme was aimed at creating awareness about eye health and the importance of preventing avoidable visual impairment, said the institute.
In line with the observance, the Department of Ophthalmology, RIMS, has initiated community outreach programmes and awareness campaigns, focusing on the importance of eye care and timely intervention.
RIMS Imphal Director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma; Medical Superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh, Dean (Academic) Prof L Rajesh Singh and Head of Department of Ophthalmology Prof Y Chingsuingamba Meitei attended the observance.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma advised younger generations and adults to restrict mobile phone use to protect eye health.
He stated that the Department of Ophthalmology, RIMS, will strive to compete and develop into a worldclass eye care centre through the procurement of advanced equipment and instruments.
Stating that an Eye Bank is expected to be established next month, he stated that an eye transplantation facility will soon be established.
He also emphasised the importance of eye donation, stating that eyes can be donated after death.
A short video showcasing World Sight Day, its theme and various activities was also screened during the programme.
Doctors, nurses, other staff and students attended the programme.
