MU hosts 'Summer camp in Mathematics' for undergraduates

Imphal, July 08 2026: A two-week Summer Camp in Mathematics, organised by the Department of Mathematics, Manipur University in collaboration with the Manipur Mathematical Society (MMS) and the Manipur University Mathematics Alumni Association (MUMAA) concluded successfully on Wednesday.

The camp, which commenced on June 29, was held over ten days including weekends.

It provided undergraduate students from across the state an opportunity to explore mathematical concepts beyond the regular curriculum and strengthen their problemsolving skills.

Around 32 participants, including students from Miranda House, University of Delhi, St Edmund's College, Shillong and various colleges of Manipur, attended four interactive classes daily.

The curriculum covered Logic and Reasoning, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Metric Spaces, Topology, MATLAB, Differential Equations and a special session on "Problem Solving in Mathematics and in Life".

The inaugural function was graced by Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice-Chancellor (i/c), Manipur University, as chief guest.

She appreciated the organisers for dedicating their vacation to academic initiatives during challenging times in the State and assured continued university support.

Prof K Binod Mangang, Head, Department of Mathematics, presided and urged students to actively interact with resource persons.

MMS president H Jayantkumar Singh, as guest of honour, opened the academic sessions with a discussion on "What is Mathematics?", exploring its logic and philosophical foundations.

At the valedictory function, chief guest Prof Ng Ibohal Singh (retired), former Head of the Department of Mathematics, said mathematics is built on truth and reasoning and remains central to human progress.

"I trust in the truth; thus, I trust in mathematics", he told students.

Prof Binod Mangang congratulated the participants and encouraged them to apply their learning.

The programme ended with certificate distribution and a vote of thanks.
