Imphal, June 08 2024:
The Jiribam unit of Rongmei Naga Council, Manipur (RNCM) has strongly condemned the ongoing violent incidents in Jiribam, and urged all communities to work towards restoring peace and harmony.
Stating that the Rongmei Naga community has coexisted cordially and peacefully with various groups in the area for decades, RNCM expressed deep dismay over the unprecedented violence between two communities.
In a statement, the Council condemned the brutal murder of Soibam Saratkumar, a resident of Gularthol, Jiribam, on June 6, 2024, near Mulargaon, and the subsequent abduction of L Thianmuang, a resident of Vengnuam Dibong Khunou, Jiribam, by unknown miscreants.
The repercussions of these incidents have led to further violence, including arson on Kuki houses in Jiribam on the night of June 6, and subsequent attacks and burning of Meetei houses in Lamtaikhunou, Borobekra.
The Council expressed concern over these disturbing events, noting that they threaten to damage the long-cherished peaceful environment in Jiribam.
The Rongmei Naga people reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and condemned acts of violence from all sides, the statement said.
The Council also appealed to all communities to avoid escalating the situation and seek a peaceful resolution for the welfare of all citizens in Jiribam.
It emphasised the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving conflicts and preserving the harmony that has been a hallmark of the region.
