Kakching celebrates 77th Van Mahotsav with plantation drive

Kakching, July 05 2026: The district-level celebration of the 77th Van Mahotsav was held at Langmeidong Playground on Sunday under the aegis of the Thoubal Forest Division, with a large-scale plantation drive and distribution of tree saplings to promote environmental conservation.

MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam of Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency attended the programme as the chief guest, while Deputy Commissioner of Kakching Angeline Renita R was the guest of honour.

Divisional Forest Officer, Thoubal Forest Division, Dr Leishangthem Jeeceelee, presided over the function.

As part of the celebration, 120 saplings were planted with the participation of around 300 people, while 900 tree seedlings were distributed to encourage afforestation and community participation in protecting the environment.

The programme was attended by Sub-Divisional Officer (Waikhong) Khwairakpam Tompok, SDC Waikhong, representatives of local civil society organisations, Village Level Federations, students, local volunteers, members of the Joint Forest Management Committee, and chairpersons and members of the Administrative Committees of Hiyanglam, Waikhong, Arong Nongmaikhong, Langmeidong, Mayeng Lamjao and Sekmaijin Gram Panchayats.

Range Forest Officer Laishram Dinesh Singh, along with officials and staff of the Forest Department, also took part in the plantation drive.

Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing Van Mahotsav Week celebrations, ADAM Kakching conducted its regular Sunday eco-activity by planting several saplings on the less fertile, rocky western side of Angaan Ching.

The plantation drive also saw the participation of football players from Sanjoy Football Coaching Centre and members of the Herbalife Team led by Jina of Kakching Wairi.

Saplings were also planted at the newly developed Kakching District Police Block.

On the occasion, ADAM secretary Surjit Kshetrimayum presented a Yes-SHE (Sundays and Holidays for Environment) promotion T-shirt to Jina in recognition of the Herbalife Team's contribution to environmental conservation.

During the district-level Van Mahotsav function at Langmeidong, ADAM also presented a Yes-SHE promotion T-shirt to Kakching Deputy Commissioner Angeline Renita R in the presence of Divisional Forest Officer Dr Leishangthem Jeeceelee, acknowledging her support for environmental initiatives in the district.
