Imphal, June 05 2024:
Dr Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kanngam Arthur, the winning Congress candidates respectively from Inner and Outer Manipur parliamentary constituencies in the 18th Lok Sabha election, were accorded warm welcome during a felicitation function hosted by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhawan, here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the function, CLP deputy leader MLA K Ranjit expressed that results of the 18th Lok Sabha election held amidst the ethnic crisis in the state reflect the true mandate and sentiment of the people.
As many precious lives were lost, thousands bereft of jobs or left to struggle to fend for themselves, the masses vented their angst and frustration on the ruling dispensation and delivered a chilling message to the BJP government through the polls, he stated while advising BJP leaders to acknowledge that they cannot govern a state with pretentious remarks, force, and unlawful tactics.
Stating that BJP cannot hope to run a government by shifting blame on the Congress and attributing chief cause of the recent flooding to 'mice', Ranjit opined that haughty remarks and irresponsible acts of BJP leaders backfired and proved disastrous in the Lok Sabha polls.
Further pointing out that the victory margin by over 1 lakh achieved by Dr Bimol is for the first time in Manipur's political history, the Sugnu MLA contended that such a dismal performance in the election does not warrant the chief minister to cling to the top post but step down on moral grounds.
The defeat of BJP candidate, despite their use of force and financial power, clearly indicates that all sections of society including the Meeteis, Nagas, Muslims and Kukis are united against the saffron party, Ranjit said.
He also contended that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clout at the centre is waning with the BJP winning only 240 seats compared to its much-hyped target of wresting over 400 seats.
Modi's fate now hinges on the support of Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh and Nitish Kumar of Bihar.
The Congress, on the other hand, secured 99 seats whereas the INDIA block commands 234 seats.
Comparing with the outcomes, Ranjit pointed out that in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP won 282 seats with Congress managing just 45.In the 2019 elections, the BJP's seats increased to 303 .
However, in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the BJP's seats dropped to 240, while the Congress' seats rose to 99.Claiming that the Congress wave has now spread across the country and reached Manipur, he also confided about the newly elected Congress MPs from Manipur pledging to resolve the current crisis and upholding the territorial integrity of the state.
