Imphal, May 02 2026:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee observed International Workers' Day (May Day) yesterday at the Irawat Bhawan Complex, Imphal, reinforcing its commitment to the rights of the working class amidst the ongoing socio-economic challenges in the State.
During the event, Maisnam Joykumar, president of AISGEF Manipur Unit, traced May Day to the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.
He said the fight for an eight-hour workday remains key to labour rights, but unorganised sector workers still face exploitation.
AITUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar said capitalist systems in the West often ignore labourers' dignity.
He noted over 80 countries mark May Day as a holiday but the struggle for socialist values continues.
"The rights provided by the Constitution will only be secured when every worker, from the driver on the highway to the laborer in the field, joins a unified struggle against exploitation", said AITUC Manipur working president Salam Yaima.
Former CPI Manipur secretary Leishangthem Thoiren also attended.
Separately, the All Manipur Manpower Upliftment Centre (AMMUC) marked May Day with a cleanliness drive and tree plantation at Irilbung Kalika, Selloi Langmai Nongmaiching foothills.
