Health Minister launches Tobacco Free Youth Campaign

Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh today launched the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal by the Classic, North AOC, Imphal.
The State level launching programme was organised by the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), State Health Society, NHM Manipur and Directorate ofHealth Services, Manipur.
Speaking as the chief guest of the event, Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan stated that in order to tackle the increasing number of tobacco-users in the Northeastern State, the Government has taken the initiative to join the Nation-wide Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 .
He said tobacco kills around 80 lakh people every year globally.
It kills around 13.5 lakh people in India every year.
The Tobacco Free Youth Campaign aims to bring down this mortality rate, he said.
It is hard for addicted persons to leave tobacco.
They need help from experts and family members.
Awareness should be raised on the harmful impacts of tobacco on health, the Minister said, appealing to the people, especially youths to avoid using tobacco and participate in the campaign to make Manipur free from tobacco.
A book containing guidelines for health workers, SOPs for villages to be tobacco free and guidelines for law enforcers-COTPA 2023 and PECA 2019 was released at the event.
Dr O Sanahanbi Devi, Director, Health Services and Dr M Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director, NHM attended the event.
