Anti Leprosy Day observed

The Department of Dermatology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observedNational Anti Leprosy Day today under the theme, "Together, let us raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and ensure that no one affected by leprosy is left behind".
According to a release issued by RIMS, the event reaffirmed the institute's commitment to raising awareness, dispelling misconceptions, and ensuring comprehensive care for individuals affected by leprosy.
Held at the OPD Complex, RIMS, Imphal, the event was graced by eminent dignitaries, including Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Imphal; Prof Th Nandakishore Singh, Department of Dermatology, RIMS, Imphal; Prof Th Bijayanti Devi, Department of Dermatology, RIMS, Imphal and Dr Chitralekha Keisham, Head (i/c), Department of Dermatology, RIMS, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar emphasized the importance of eliminating the stigma surrounding leprosy, ensuring equal access to treatment and rehabilitation for affected individuals, and promoting early detection and timely intervention.
The event reinforced the collective responsibility of society in eradicating discrimination and fostering inclusive healthcare.
As part of the observance, a teleplay was showcased highlighting the importance of compassion, early diagnosis, and effective treatment in overcoming the disease.
It was aimed at fostering empathy among the audience and reinforcing the message that leprosy is a treatable condition that should not be feared.
The event was also attended by the Principal of the College of Nursing, RIMS, Imphal, HODs, nursing officials, staff, and students of RIMS, Imphal.
Moreover, National Leprosy Eradication Programme and State Health Society, National Health Mission Manipur also jointly observed "Anti Leprosy Day & Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign 2025" at Heritage Hall, IMA Complex, Lamphelpat.
It was attended by Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Imphal; Dr Salam Bocha Singh, State Leprosy Officer, NLEP, Manipur and Dr Soram Goutam, Secretary, IMA, Manipur State Branch as presidium members.
At the event, the dignitaries highlighted that Anti Leprosy Day is celebrated on January 30 every year in the country to increase awareness about various aspects of leprosy and remove the stigma associated with leprosy.
They explained that leprosy is a disease that has been present in society since ancient times and it can cause permanent disability in the human body if not detected early for proper treatment while the stigma associated with it makes the disease a public health concern.
The dignitaries also shared that the observance of Anti Leprosy Day provides an opportunity to create mass awareness about leprosy, educate people and remove misconceptions.
During the event, the gathering also observed two minutes of silence and offered floral tributes to a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi.
