Imphal, May 22 2025:
The Meitei Alliance (MA) has submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking a high-level probe into the Gwaltabi incident where Mahar Regiment personnel directed the removal of "Manipur" signage from a State Transport bus.
In the memorandum, the alliance expressed deep concern and distress over the action, terming it a "blatant assault" on the identity, dignity, and Constitutional status of Manipur and its people.
Many Manipuris, who continue to hold onto hope for peace, dignity, and unity in the State, have been left disheartened by the shocking incident at Gwaltabi, it said.
Asking who authorized the security forces' actions and why a legitimate State vehicle was barred from travelling within its own territory merely for bearing the State's name, the Alliance asserted that Central forces who are meant to maintain peace and impartiality, appear to be yielding to divisive elements.
Demanding a time-bound and transparent investigation into the incident, focusing on the chain of command and responsibility, it urged the Governor to fix accountability and take disciplinary action against the personnel involved.
It also sought firm guarantees from the Governor to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The alliance also called for a review of the role and conduct of Central forces deployed in the State, particularly in areas where public trust has eroded.
