Imphal, December 17 2024:
The Haomee Youth Front (HYF) has raised questions about the true purpose of Joint Action Committees (JACs) which are set up to demand justice every time an individual is tragically killed.
A press release issued by Kh Johnson, general secretary, HYF, stated that on November 11, three children, including an infant, and three women were abducted by Kuki militants and subsequently killed.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, widespread protests broke out across the State and beyond and a JAC was formed to seek justice for the victims.
However, after a few days, the JAC arrived at an agreement with the State Government and the public outrage eventually died out.
At this juncture, HYF questioned if the victims' family and the public have received justice for the tragic killings.
In another instance, Laishram Prem (18) was killed in an encounter by security personnel on December 14 .
Similarly, a JAC was also set up for this particular case and a resolution appeared to be on the horizon even before the people stopped mourning, maintained HYF.
In such cases, even if the JACs reach an agreement with the Government, the grief continues to remain with the victims' families and the public, said HYF.
Questioning the true purpose of these JACs, HYF further asked what will be the ultimate result of the ongoing conflict if every death is "resolved" without delivering true justice.
It further asked if Meetei lives can be bartered away with "agreements" between the JACs and State Government and if similar resolutions will be reached by JACs even on the question of annihilation of the Meetei community.
HYF asserted that the true movement of the people has been disrupted by such JACs.
