ZWAD commemorates 33rd death anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu

Imphal, February 17 2026: The Zeliangrong Welfare Association Delhi (ZWAD) solemnly commemorated the 33rd death anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu, paying tributes to the indomitable freedom fighter and spiritualpolitical leader who devoted her life to the liberation, dignity, and unity of the Zeliangrong people, and to the broader cause of India's independence.

ZWUD in a statement said that Rani Gaidinliu, born on January 26, 1915, at Nungkao (Luangkao) village in present-day Tamenglong district of Manipur, joined the freedom struggle at the age of 13 under the mentorship of her cousin and visionary leader, Haipou Jadonang.

Following Jadonang's execution by the British in 1931, she assumed leadership of the Heraka movement and transformed it into a formidable resistance against colonial oppression.

Her movement opposed unjust taxation, forced labour, and cultural subjugation, while mobilising the Zeliangrong people to preserve their indigenous faith and identity.

In March 1932, her followers confronted colonial forces in the historic Hangrum attack, demonstrating remarkable courage despite limited arms.

Pursued by colonial authorities, she took refuge in remote jungle hideouts, including the caves of Mount Kisha in Magulong, before being captured on October 17, 1932, at Poilwa.

Sentenced to life imprisonment at the age of 17, she spent 14 years in British prisons.

Deeply moved by her bravery, Jawaharlal Nehru in 1937 conferred upon her the title "Rani", a name that became synonymous with her legacy.

She was released in 1947 following India's independence.

In recognition of her immense contributions, the Government of India honoured her with the Tamrapatra Freedom Fighter Award in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 1982, among other accolades.

Rani Gaidinliu passed away on February 17, 1993, at her native village Luangkao at the age of 78 .

On the occasion, ZWAD urged citizens to remember her not merely as a regional icon but as a national hero whose life embodied courage, self-determination and constitutional integration.

The association stated that her ideals of unity, justice and inclusive development continue to inspire generations.
