31st Guru Kirtan Seva kicks off

The "31 st Guru Kirtan Seva (The Festival of Nata Sankirtana)" organised by Gulapi Nata Sankirtana Academy began today its premises in Kwakeithel Nganappithong Mapal, Imphal.
The inaugural function was graced by Dilip Mayengbam, former Director, JN Manipur Dance Academy; cultural activist Loitongbam Brajamohon and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Saratchand Thiyam as presidium members.
The two-days long festival began with the offering of floral tributes to the deceased Gurus of Gulapi Nata Sankirtana Academy followed by a performance of "Sanaton Sanga" by the artists of the academy.
Speaking on the occasion, Saratchand Thiyam said that Nata Sankirtana, which has been recognised as one of the intangible cultural heritages by the UNESCO, is among the dying art forms of the State.
He also emphasised on the importance of learning Nata Sankirtana by the youths of the State so that the rich heritage of this art is carried forward.
During the event eminent critic Laishram Memo Singh was conferred the "Khwairakpam Leibakmacha Singh Nineshing Mana 2024" while the "Khwairakpam Wangkhei Singh Award 2024" was presented to Meikam Thoiba Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Dance & Music, Manipur University.
The awards include a citation, Lengyan, certificate and cash prize.
