Awareness programme on Hornbill conservation held at Khundong Khunkhaiba village

Tamenglong, February 16 2026: A one-day awareness programme on Hornbill conservation was held today at Khundong Khunkhaiba village under Tamei Range, organised by the Tamenglong Forest Division, in association with the Khundong Khunkhaiba Village Authority and Liangmai Naga Council, Western Zone.

The programme was attended by Khundrakpam Johnson, Range Forest Officer of Tamei Range as chief guest; Mathiugomang Thiumai, vice-chairman of Khundong Khunkhaiba Village Authority as functional president; and P Mairisibou, chairman of Liangmai Naga Council as guest of honour.

Around 60 men and women from nearby villages participated in the awareness programme, including representatives of village authorities from Lenglong, Dikuram, Upper Takou, Lower Takou, Tamei Headquarters and Konphung village.

Forest officials highlighted that the area is historically significant as a natural habitat for hornbills, with four species found in the region-Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Rufous-necked Hornbill and Wreathed Hornbill - known locally by different names among the Liangmei and Rongmei communities.

During the programme, pamphlets detailing different hombill species found in the district, which are listed under Schedule 1 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, were distributed to create greater awareness about their conservation.
