Bishnupur/Kakching/Thoubal, June 14 2026:
World Environment Day 2026 was observed across Manipur with tree plantation programmes, cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns organised in Bishnupur, Kakching and Yairipok, highlighting urgent calls for environmental protection and climate action.
At Moirang Hanubi Ching, a tree plantation programme was held at Ebenthou Resort, jointly organised by Moirang Thangjing Yageirel Marup, Ebenthou Resort Moirang, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Manipur Bird Club (MBC) and Sangai First Foundation (SfF), under the sponsorship of the Divisional Forest Officer, Bishnupur Forest Division.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Conservator of Forest L Joykumar urged collective public action to combat environmental degradation.
He cautioned that indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources has led to significant climate changes, loss of biodiversity, and reduction in migratory bird populations in the region.
He stressed that deforestation has severely disrupted ecological balance and warned that environmental protection cannot be limited to symbolic observance on World Environment Day alone.
He appealed to the public to adopt tree plantation as a daily responsibility and contribute actively to restoring ecological balance.
As part of the programme, around 300 saplings of indigenous, fruit-bearing and flowering trees were planted in and around the Hanubi Ching area.
The event was attended by Special Secretary, Environment and Climate Change/Land Resources and Conservator of Forest, Government of Manipur RK Amarjit, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Parks and Sanctuaries) L Birmangol, DFO Bishnupur W Romabai, Moirang Thangjing Yageirel Marup vice-president M Joy and SfF president Dr Kh Shamungou.
Meanwhile, in Kakching district, the Kakching District Journalists' Association (KADJA) organised World Environment Day programmes under the sponsorship of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
The observance was conducted in two sessions, beginning with a cleanliness drive involving journalists, students of Grace Cottage Academy and members of Khannasi Lup, who cleared plastic waste from Kakching Ethei Khong Keithel area to Kakching Khunyai Leikai and surrounding canal zones.
In the second session held at the Library and Information Centre auditorium, an awareness programme on environmental protection was conducted with Director of Environment and Climate Change T Brajakumar as chief guest.
Kakching DFO N Munal, senior journalist A Mubi and ADAM secretary Ksh Surjit served as resource persons, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices and pollution control.
In Yairipok, the Bishnupur Youth Federation Yairipok (BYFY) organised a tree plantation and cleanliness drive as part of World Environment Week under the theme "Save Climate".
BYFY president Ananda Laishram said the initiative aimed to address climate change through community participation, youth engagement and awareness against plastic use.
He also expressed gratitude to Yairipok Police Station, Yairipok Municipal Council and locality for their cooperation in the programme.
