Imphal, March 13 2026:
The All Manipur Scientific Fish Farmers Association has appealed to the Government to waive loans taken by farmers in the region or exempt them from interest payments, citing severe hardships caused by natural calamities and ongoing conflict.
Salam Rohendro, general secretary of the association, highlighted the plight of farmers during a press meet at the Manipur Press Club today.
He explained that many farmers, lacking alternative sources of income, depend heavily on Government assistance and struggle significantly.
Farmers in the region have faced a series of setbacks.
Following the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, recurring floods have caused significant damage.
More recently, the ethnic conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023, has left farmers unable to access their land or markets, making it impossible to repay bank loans on time.
The association urged the Government to prevent banks from capitalizing overdue amounts and adding interest to the principal.
Rohendro noted that other States have implemented loan waiver schemes during times of crisis and requested the Manipur Government to consider similar relief measures or help farmers resume their activities fully.
