Tobacco Cessation Awareness Programme held

In connection with the Golden Jubilee celebration of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and World Tobacco Day, a Tobacco Cessation Awareness Programme was held today at Manipur Press Club.
The programme was jointly organised by Indian Dental Association (IDA), Manipur State Branch, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dental College, RIMS and AMWJU.
It was attended by AMWJU president, Bijoy Kakchingtabam and IDA, Manipur, president, Dr RK Ratan Kumar as presidium members.
AMWJU, general secretary, A Jiten gave the welcome address while the keynote address was delivered by IDA, Manipur, secretary, Dr Deepak Ningombam.
At the event, Bijoy Kakchingtabam said that the programme was earlier scheduled to be held on the occasion of World Tobacco Day on May 31, but was postponed due the recent flood situation in the State.
He also called for collective effort to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use.
"Tobacco is a great villain to mankind.
Tobacco kills almost 8 million people every year across the world", said Dr Ratan Kumar.
Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dental College, RIMS, Assistant Professor, Dr Diptajit Das delivered a lecture on the topic "Understanding tobacco addiction" while Dental College, RIMS, Assistant Professor, Dr Rajkumari Surbala Devi spoke on "Strategies for successfill quitting" .
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by S Sonia,
joint secretary of AMWJU.
