Bitumen-laden truck overturns near Senapati amid safety concerns at worksite

Senapati, April 12 2026: A bitumen-laden truck met with an accident on Saturday at Lairouching, below an Army camp in Senapati district, reportedly due to insufficient road space at an ongoing pipeline construction site.

The mishap left the driver and his helper injured.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a 22-wheeler trailer (Model 4923) bearing registration number PB-05AP-7766, carrying 216 drums of bitumen destined for Senapati, lost control and overturned along the highway.

The accident site falls under an area where Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) is currently undertaking gas pipeline construction work.

Sources alleged that nearly half of the road was occupied by construction activities, leaving limited space for vehicles to pass.

It was further reported that essential safety measures such as warning signs, caution indicators, and protective barricades were not in place, despite being mandatory at such work zones.

Adding to the congestion, an IGGL Bolero vehicle was reportedly parked on the opposite side of the road at the time of the incident, further narrowing the passage for heavy vehicles.

Following the accident, workers present at the site reportedly fled the scene.

While some allegedly claimed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and driving at high speed, eyewitnesses at the spot refuted the claim, stating that the lack of safety arrangements and road obstruction were the primary causes of the accident.

Police personnel led by the SDPO, Senapati Police, rushed to the spot and assessed the situation.

The injured driver and helper were later shifted to the District Hospital for treatment.

A GD entry has been registered at Maram Police Station for necessary action.
