MACHA LEIMA pays tribute to strength, resilience of Manipuri women

Imphal, December 11 2025: On the auspicious occasion ofNupi Lan, Manipuri Chanura Lieshem Marup (MACHA LEIMA) has called for honoring the strength, resilience and achievements of Manipuri women over the years.

In a release, MACHA LEIMA said that Nupi Lan is a landmark event in the history of Manipur and represents one of the popular agitations fought against an extremely exploitation form of socio-economic and political system executed by the joint feudalistic colonial rule.

The organisation recounted that the first 'Nupi Lan' had broken out against a British administrative order that mandated using men as forced labourers, while the second Nupi Lan erupted on December 12, 1939 when a large number of women revolted against the artificial scarcity of rice and its export outside Manipur.

Praising the courage and spirit shown by the women who valiantly fought against the British forces in the two historic movements, MACHA LEIMA appealed to the people to follow the footsteps of the brave mothers and fight unitedly for the welfare of the State.

MACHA LEIMA also mentioned that Nupi Lan isn't just a historical event but a living legacy of Manipuri women's activism, seen today in ongoing struggles for economic justice, political reform, and defending Manipur's integrity.

"After the conflict broke out on May 3, 2023, Manipuri women have emerged as powerful forces for peace and protection.

They have taken on active and multifaceted roles, ranging from community protection to humanitarian aid, mirroring past struggles against colonial exploitation", it added.

The organisation continued that women have been central to Manipur's response to the crisis, acting as guardians, caregivers, and activists, demonstrating immense resilience in the face of State failure and deep-seated ethnic conflict.

Highlighting the vital role of women in movements, their unity, and continued efforts in social change, MACHA LEIMA urged all to recognize their resilience, leadership, and collective power to foster peace and progress in Manipur, moving beyond individual pursuits.
