Kakching, August 11 2024:
Internally displaced people from Bishnupur district's Napat and Tangjeng staying in different relief camps in Kakching staged a sit-in protest demonstration at Sugnu Keithel today urging the Government to allow them to return to their homes.
During the demonstration, Angomchambam ongbi Rita Leima, who is staying at a relief camp at Kakching, said the ongoing crisis has made thousands of indigenous people refugees in their own land.
The internally displaced people have suffered for more than 15 months and they want to return to their villages.
Adequate security measures must be put in place for them to return to their homes, she said.
If the Government doesn't take up positive actions soon, the internally displaced people may return to their homes forcefully and on their own, and it (Govt) should bear responsibility for the consequences that arise, she said.
Rita further lamented that in more than 15 month of the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hardly spoken about the Manipur crisis.
"Is Manipur not a part of India? Why is our PM silent?" Rita asked.
With no concrete steps taken to bring peace and resolve the crisis, people are starting to lose faith in the Government.
People in the relief camps are unsure of their future, she said.
Yumanam Ojit Meitei from Napat village who is staying at Tangjeng Mangjing Relief Camp claimed the Napat villagers have got little relief packages, and they want to return to their homes.
He said the Bishnupur district's SP may be given the overall charge of the security apparatus in the district and allow the IDPs to return to their villages.
He reiterated that the people may return to their villages on their own if the Government fails to take up appropriate measures for their return soon.
