Imphal, April 09 2025:
Social worker Sakir Ahmed from Wabagai Assembly Constituency is gearing up to file a petition against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 in the Supreme Court.
Speaking to media persons at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, he asserted that the Act is against the Right to Religious Freedom enshrined in Article 25 of the constitution of India, which is one of the fundamental rights.
Denouncing the changes made by the Act on the functioning of the Waqf Board, he asserted that other religions in India also have their respective boards or organisations who are in charge of the religious properties.
He questioned why a law has been created to allow persons belonging to other religions to be members of the Waqf Board.
Sakir Ahmed termed this as a move to oppress the Muslim community and deny them their rights.
Saying that an Act can be repealed through the Right to Constitutional Remedies (Article 32), the social worker conveyed his plan to submit a petition in the apex court for the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 .
