Workshop on rare diseases held at RIMS

Imphal, September 08 2025: The Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, organised a sensitization workshop on "Rare Diseases" at Banting Hall, RIMS, Imphal today.

As per a release issued by RIMS, the workshop was conducted under the aegis of the Rare Diseases Cell, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India.

The inaugural session was graced by dignitaries, including Dr L Swasticharan, DDG & Director (EMR), DGHS, MoHFW, Government of India; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital; and Prof L Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), RIMS .

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Swasticharan highlighted RIMS's new role as a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases, supported by a dedicated Rare Disease Fund and the expansion of Centres of Excellence across India.

He stressed the need for early diagnosis, supportive care, and better use of resources, while noting that the participation of national experts would strengthen RIMS's capacity in rare disease management.

Prof Sanjib Singh stated that the workshop - first in a series of five mandated by MoHFW, seeks to raise awareness in Manipur and neighbouring States.

He observed that despite the availability of dedicated funds, few applicants have qualified, underscoring the need for wider awareness and better utilization of Government schemes.

The workshop included technical sessions by experts from MoHFW, WHO India, and national institutions, covering global and national perspectives, policy frameworks, antenatal and newborn screening, genetic counselling, whole exome/genome sequencing, and pediatric applications.

Panel discussions and lectures further addressed challenges, preventive strategies, and the importance of collaboration in managing rare diseases.

The programme was attended by the Principal of Dental College & College of Nursing, HODs, faculty members, DMOs, Medical Superintendent from various district hospitals, panellist, speakers and staff of RIMS, Imphal.
