Imphal, August 04 2025:
The traditional practice of making thread using a spinning wheel, locally known as "Tarengna Langchak Chakpa", has been innovatively modified by utilizing a sewing machine motor to create an electric machine that can spin thread much faster.
The electric spinning wheel is being crafted by Ningthoujam Sanatomba, son of Tombi and Thambalsana, a resident of Keibul Lamjao Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur district.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Sanatomba said that the idea to create an electric spinning wheel struck him after watching his wife laboriously spinning thread using a traditional spinning wheel, a time-consuming process crucial for textile manufacturing.
Saying that he conceptualized and created the electric spinning wheel using a motor, without drawing inspiration from anyone else, he added that many weavers approached him to craft similar machines for them after seeing his wife work on the electric spinning wheel.
Sanatomba mentioned that he has sold six electric spinning wheels so far, priced at around Rs 2,500 to Rs 2,600 per unit.
Salam Sanathoi, a weaver from Keibul Lamjao Mayai Leikai who purchased the electric spinning wheel, said that traditional spinning was time-consuming and laborious.
She added that she now spins thread with ease with the machine.
