State SP chief calls for NRC before census

Imphal, April 04 2026: Konthoujam Bishorjit, Manipur state president of the Samajwadi Party (SP), has appealed to the public to remain cautious and not let monetary influences cloud their judgment during elections.

He made the appeal at a gathering held at his residence in Konthoujam Lairembi to welcome new members to the party.

During the event, Bishorjit voiced strong concerns about conducting the Census in the State without first implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

He criticized the census proceeding amid demands to prioritize identifying indigenous people over "outsiders", warning that native communities risk marginalization without proper safeguards.

It is time for all political parties to unite and discuss the implications of conducting the census before the NRC, he said.

He also slammed the recent Assembly Session for ignoring the NRC issue and called on the Chief Minister to act decisively in line with public will.

Bishoijit reaffirmed his party's pledge to bring stability to the State and empower the people to regain their independence and self-sufficiency, highlighting the need to strengthen the Samajwadi Party's presence in the region.

Other notable attendees at the event included party advisor Wangkhem Khambi, Longjam Ranjit, vice president Romeo Khundrakpam, and Moirangthem Mangi.
