Thamnapokpi villagers oppose proposed site for Girls' Sainik School

Moirang, August 03 2026: The people of Thamnapokpi have welcomed the proposed establishment of the first girls' Sainik School in the Northeast under the Chinmaya Mission at Moirang Thamnapokpi, but have strongly opposed the site reportedly selected for its construction.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Thamnapokpi Youth Worker Club office today, Moirangthem Muton, Ward No 4 member of the Ngangkhalawai Gram Panchayat Administrative Committee, said the villagers would not accept the proposed site and warned that they were prepared to launch various forms of agitation if the school was constructed there forcibly.

Muton said the proposed site is an important area of Thamnapokpi, housing a playground, a water supply scheme and Satjal Academy, among other facilities, which are essential for the local community.

He alleged that on July 20 at around 8 pm, a team led by the Home Minister and other government officials conducted a Bhoomi Puja at the site for setting up the girls' Sainik School without informing or consulting the villagers, local clubs, Meira Paibis and other organisations of Thamnapokpi.

He further alleged that the land had been leased out for construction of the school on April 15, 2024, at the height of the ethnic conflict, without consulting the villagers, and strongly condemned the move.

Muton said the area was not only important for the villagers but also held immense significance during the ongoing conflict, as local villagers had guarded the area when attempts were allegedly made to take control of it.

He added that villagers had fought to protect the area and some had even lost their lives.

Stating that the proposed construction of the Sainik School at the site was unacceptable, Muton said the decision to oppose the move was a collective one taken by the villagers.

He added that a memorandum containing their demands would be submitted to the Chief Minister.

The press conference was attended by leaders of the village Meira Paibi Lup, representatives of local clubs, office-bearers of the Panchayat body and representatives of various organisations.
