Imphal, December 02 2011:
A joint meeting of tribal organizations, social workers, political leaders, village chiefs and student bodies held under the aegis of Tribal Joint Action Committee on Delimitation (TJACD), Manipur here today has unanimously resolved to boycott the visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and INC Supremo Sonia Gandhi to Manipur scheduled tomorrow.
Informing this in a statement made available to the press, Co-Convenor of TJACD Thangmang alleged that the present Congress-led governments, both at the state and the centre, have been denying the rights and privileges of the tribals in Manipur.
He recalled that the delimitation of Assembly Constituencies in Manipur had been stalled by a stay order of the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court on January 19, 2007 following a writ petition filed by the All Political Parties of Manipur.
However, the Supreme Court on July 13, 2007 overruled the impugned order of the Lower Court and set the stage for the Delimitation Commission to complete its task in respect of Manipur state after several hearings on a writ petition filed by Indo-Myanmar Tribal Development Association on behalf of various tribal organizations in the state.
Unfortunately, a special single sitting of the Assembly session convened on July 30, 2007 brought up an ordinance to derail the delimitation process despite strong opposition from 10 MLAs who staged a walk out from the House, Thangmang lamented.
