Students sensitised on importance of Sangai conservation

Bishnupur, September 29 2026: A one-day school students' sensitisation programme on Sangai Conservation was organised at Loktak Christian Model (LCM) High School Moirang, as part of the observance of Sangai Day.

A press note by Sangai First Foundation (SfF) Manipur said that the programme was organised with the objective of sensitising young students to the ecological, cultural and conservation significance of the Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii) and its natural habitat, the Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park The programme was graced by Dr Khangembam Shamungou, president, Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur; Kumam Jugeshor, vice-president, SfF, Manipur; L Birendro Singh Principal LCM High School, Moirang and Th Surchandra Senior Teacher LCM High School, Moirang as the presidium members.

In his introductory address, Kumam Jugeshor outlined the objectives of the programme and highlighted the historical, ecological and cultural significance of the Sangai and Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park.

He drew the attention of the students to the major conservation challenges confronting the Sangai, including increasing human pressure, habitat degradation associated with the Ithai Barrage, and the risks arising from a restricted population and potential inbreeding.

He emphasised that conservation of the Sangai requires sustained public awareness, community participation and a strong conservation ethic among the younger generation.

He called upon the students to develop a sense of responsibility towards wildlife, wetlands and the broader natural environment.

Dr Khangembam Shamungou conducted an engaging interaction with the students on the identification and anatomical features of the Sangai, its behaviour, ecological significance, and the cultural heritage associated with the species and its habitat.

His interaction helped the students understand the Sangai not merely as a rare wildlife species, but as an important symbol of Manipur's natural and cultural heritage.

The session also created an engaging atmosphere through the presentation of a song on the Sangai, with lyrics composed by Dr Shamungou and rendered by renowned singer Ranbir Thouna.

As part of his contribution towards environmental education and knowledge sharing, Dr Shamungou donated a set of books authored by him on the Sangai and environmental issues to the school library.

Later, the State Tree, Uningthou (Phoebe bootanica) was planted within the school campus with an aim to promote awareness among students about the importance of native plant species and to encourage their active participation in biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship.

A Spot Quiz Competition was also conducted with the active participation of 126 students and twenty-seven winners were selected who will be awarded during the 3rd Sangai Day Celebration to be held on December 10, 2026 .

The programme concluded with a collective conservation pledge, in which the participants resolved to support the protection and conservation of the Sangai and its natural habitat.
