MASLSA empowers 45 new panel lawyers with key skills

Imphal, February 27 2026: The Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) organised a 1 -Day Capacity Building Programme for 45 newly inducted panel lawyers today at the Conference Hall, ADR Building, Lamphelpat.

The programme commenced with a welcome address from S Mangaleibi Devi, Additional Member Secretary, MASLSA .

As per a release issued by MASLSA, the training was divided into three distinct sessions to provide comprehensive guidance.

The inaugural session was led by Alek Muivah, Member Secretary, MASLSA, who spoke on the topic, "Role and Responsibilities of Legal Services Lawyers- Do's and Don'ts for a Panel Lawyer" .

He stated that the primary responsibility of panel lawyers is to serve the poor and underprivileged sections of society, who constitute around 80% of India's population.

He highlighted a critical gap in legal awareness, noting that many citizens remain unaware of their rights and entitlements.

This is where Panel Lawyers play a crucial role-not just in Courtroom representation, but in spreading legal awareness and educating people about available remedies, he added.

He also outlined key responsibilities for panel lawyers, including regular visits to Legal Services Clinics, jails, and Observation Homes, as well as mentoring para legal volunteers.

"Professionalism and dedication are key", he emphasized, urging lawyers to be competent, prompt, and efficient in handling cases.

In civil matters, he encouraged promoting amicable settlements through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

The second session, led by W Tonen Meitei, Judge, Special Court No 2 (POCSO), delved into "Basic Knowledge in Civil Remedies with Special Emphasis on Injunction" .

He broke down the fundamentals of civil remedies under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, covering jurisdiction, instituting suits, and types of injunctions.

Sorokhaibam Rabindra Singh, Advocate, took the third session, focusing on "Lawyering Skills - Civil Law: Drafting, Examination of Witnesses, and Arguments".

He shared practical insights on drafting pleadings and courtroom techniques, enhancing the lawyers' professional skills.

The programme wrapped up with a vote of thanks by Fakhrul Islam Choudhury, Deputy Member Secretary, MASLSA .
