Challenges in ITEP implementation deliberated at State-level workshop

Imphal, September 26 2026: A two-day State level workshop on "Challenges in Implementation of Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) in Manipur" began yesterday at the Conference Hall, City Convention Centre.

The workshop is jointly organised by the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Government of Manipur and Association of Manipur Teacher Education Institutions (AMTEI) .

Prof Dibyajyoti Mahanta, Chairman, Eastern Regional Committee, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), inaugurated the workshop as chief guest.

Addressing the inaugural function, Prof Mahanta said India's youth population is three times more than the total population of the developed United States and the global economic scenario currently revolves around America.

He said teachers play a crucial role in providing quality education to the youth.

Noting the need to fully tap the potential of India's youth, he said education has a major role in making the country a developed nation with equal opportunities and inclusive growth.

Teachers working in the education sector have a big contribution in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 .

Economic development alone cannot be brought by education, but under NEP 2020 students should be given multidisciplinary education, he said.

Under ITEP, teachers will take care of students from foundation level to secondary level, Prof Mahanta said.

A person who qualifies ITEP will not only become a school teacher but can also become a college or university teacher after pursuing Master's degree or PhD research.

Principal of Ideal Teachers' Training Academy Dr Yengkokpam Ranjan said NCTE has introduced ITEP as a new course in place of the BEd programme.

The State-level workshop is being held to deliberate on whether Government and private colleges which earlier ran BEd courses can successfully implement ITEP in the State.

The workshop will discuss the differences between ITEP and BEd courses and whether the old B.Ed course will continue after implementation of ITEP, he said.

Additional Director of University and Higher Education, Bungba Maibam Khuman presided over the inaugural function.

Joint Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Selina Thounaojam; Director, College Development Council, Manipur University Prof Hanjabam Shukhdeba Sharma and President of AMTEI Dr Waikhom Anilkumar attended as guests of honour.
