IMPHAL: Sorshia Christian College, a rapidly growing institution affiliated with Manipur University, observed World Intellectual Property Day 2025 under the theme "IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP." The event, held at the college in Mapao Zingtun village, highlighted the vital role of intellectual property (IP) in fostering creativity and innovation.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Atom Sunil Singh, director of Sorshia Christian College, underscored IP as the foundation of innovation, from the folk traditions of Manipur to advancements in agricultural technology.
He urged participants to view IP protection as essential for future enterprises.
The programme featured musical interludes by student performers, celebrating the theme through traditional Manipuri rhythms.

The guests of honour of the event offered insights into various aspects of IP.
Haobam Chitra Devi, former assistant director of Art and Culture, underscored the need for stronger copyright protections to support Manipur's film industry and called for greater public awareness.
Maisnam Chanu Liklainu, CFO, RD & PR Department, discussed the economic benefits of IP, emphasising opportunities for artisans and entrepreneurs to monetise their work through grants, subsidies and licensing.
Asheibam Bele Singh, MSc in Organic Agriculture from Wageningen University, linked agricultural patents to community sustainability, highlighting the importance of protecting eco-friendly farming techniques.
Thockchom Biren Singh, guest faculty at Needy Home Academy, advocated for integrating IP and financial literacy into educational curricula.
Dr Raman Chance, associate professor of History at DMU, placed IP within a historical framework, noting its evolution from long-standing traditions.
discussed the significance of patenting eco-friendly agricultural innovations.
Chief guest Dr Kh Somendro Singh, former director of Institute of Cooperative Management, Guwahati, highlighted the transformative potential of academia-government collaboration in nurturing innovation.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by N Ratan Meetei, director, AIMS .
