He made the statement during the 5th Meitei Pangal Khunthok Ningsing Numit ceremony held today at Islamic Cultural Research Organisation (ICRO), Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai jointly organised by Maipak Ningthou Committee and Progressive Youth Community.
The ceremony was graced by Loitongbam Ibotombi, president, AMESCO; Y Wajiuddin, president, Progressive Youth Community; Farid Bogimayum, president, Pangal Students' Organisation; Baboy Korimayum, president, Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation; Yk Hayatur Rahaman, president, All Manipur Meitei Pangal Clubs Organisation and Arshad Baseimayum, convenor, Maipak Ningthou Committee as the presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Arshad Baseimayum stated that as per the resolution passed during the seminar organised by Meipak Ningthou Committee on November 10, 2019 at GM Hall, it was agreed upon to celebrate the 17th day of Inga as Meitei Pangal Khunthok Ningsing Numit to remember and celebrate when Meitei Pangals were accorded "Aribam" surname/title and trace their early settlement in Manipur.
During the reign of King Khagemba (1597-1652), Meitei Pangals (Muslims) from the land of "Gaya" had arrived to extend support during war.
Impressed by their bravery, honour, craftsmanship etc, they were prevented from returning by the King and were given land for settlement and Meitei women in marriage in honour thus signifying the close bond between the two communities, said Arshad.
Additionally, the gathering observed a 2-minute silence to honour the martyrs who laid down their lives in the conflict as well as the early Meitei Pangal ancestors.
