Reserve 25 percent seats for poor and needy in private schools, urges DESAM's president

Imphal, June 22 2022: The Government should come up with specific measures to reserve 25 percent seats out of the total seats reservations to provide free and compulsory education to poor and needy students in private schools of the State as per Right to Education Act (RTE Act) .

The above demand was raised by president of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Leishangthem Lamyanba while speaking at the awareness campaign held today at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School as a part of the ongoing campaign for disturbance free education zone initiated by Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand, said a press release by the committee.

He further stated that Rs 2.5 crores have been sanctioned for general education in the State every year, however the condition of Government schools continue to deteriorate which is really unfortunate.

The rate of enrolment in Government schools has declined to 13 percent from 26 percent as per the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) and Manipur is in the top spot when it comes to enrolment in private schools, he added.

Expressing concern over the above scenario, he maintained that the Government schools are unable to provide quality education as promised.

L Lamyanba who is also the convenor of the coordinating committee appealed to the State Government to reserve 25 percent seats for poor and needy students in private schools as per the RTE Act as private schools are contributing majorly in providing efficient education to the students as compared to Government schools.

Later the students of the school also formed human chain and raised many slogans including 'Provide RTE Act benefits in private schools', 'Refrain from any activities which may disrupt the educational environment', 'Stop corrupting the educational sector', 'Make way for a conducive environment in education' etc.
