Zonal Education Office (ZEO)-Zone 1, Imphal West District, in collaboration with Wide Angle and CRY (Child Rights and You), launched the distribution of educational materials across 15 relief camps in Imphal West district on Monday.
As per a release issued by Wide Angle, the camps include THAU Ground Relief Camp (Thangmeiband), Manipur Trade & Expo Centre (Lamboikhongnangkhong), Meitei Langol Leima Khullem Leikai Relief Camp, Khuyathong Tombisana High School (Khuyathong), Khomdram Selungba Upper Primary School Relief Camp (Thangmeiband Thingel), Alternate Housing Complex Relief Camp (Langol, Game Village, Zone-III), Tairenpokpi PS (Lamsang), Phumlou Keiroi Primary School, Phayeng High School, Sardar Patel High School (Khurkhul), Mandop Yumpham Relief Camp, Recent Higher Secondary School (Sagoltongba), Konthoujam Makha Khabam High School, Wisdom Palace School (New Keithelmanbi) and Senjam Chirang Community Hall.
The initiative, led by Sucheta Kumukcham, ZEO of Zone 1-Imphal West, aims to support 1,330 children currently residing in these relief camps.
These children have endured significant challenges due to the ethnic unrest that escalated in May 2023, leading to the displacement of over 60,000 people.
Montu Ahanthem, secretary of Wide Angle, said "In addition to the educational facilities being provided by the Department of Education, Wide Angle will be supplementing these efforts through various support activities aimed at enhancing learning experiences for children in the relief camps".
"Education is a right, not a privilege, even in times of conflict", he added.
The event was flagged off from the office of the Directorate of School Education-Lamphal by Bisheshwar Khumukcham, Additional Director of Education (Schools/ Valley) and Nodal Officer of relief camps in Zone 1, Imphal West.
Anil Khumukcham and Kenedy Sapam, DI of Schools were also present at the function.
The initiative represents a modest yet meaningful stride in sustaining education and supporting the learning journey of children impacted by conflict, despite the adversities they face.
