Imphal, January 21 2026:
The 36th death anniversary of Ima Longjam Rajani, who played a significant role in the Nupi Lan movement, was commemorated today.
The event, organized by the Nupeelal Memorial Association, Manipur, at its head office located in Tera Bazar, Imphal, commenced with the offering of floral tributes to a photograph of Ima Rajani.
Speaking on the occasion, Longjamba Meitei Netaji, secretary of the association's steering committee, highlighted that the gathering marked the 36th anniversary of the passing of Ima Rajani, who led the Nupi Lan movement for an independent Manipur from 1939 to 1941 for 24 months.
Netaji mentioned that Ima Rajani, concerned that the history of the Nupi Lan movement might be lost, had preserved many records and written a book on the subject.
"This book was later released by the Manipur Government at the first Statelevel Nupi Lan event, with the then CM Rishang Keishing officiating", he added.
He asserted that the artists of the Nupeelal Association Manipur use this book as a foundation for their Nupi Lan dramas, which help educate the younger generation about this history.
These dramas have been performed in Manipur and in areas where Meitei people reside outside of Manipur since 2005 .
Netaji further stated that the commemoration was held to ensure that future generations are aware of the valuable historical narratives left behind by Ima Rajani and to remember her contributions to society.
Members and officials of the association participated in the programme.
