Thoubal, April 19 2025:
Raising a question mark on government's commitment on development of government schools, Irong Makha Primary Madrassa with classes from I to V has been functioning from just one room, staffed by only two teachers and the room also doubles as staffroom.
As part of Pangal Students' Organisation (PSO), Manipur's academic campaign 'Aphaba Maheiroi puthoksi Aphaba Khunai Oihansi', a team of the organisation visited Irong Makha Primary Madrassa at Irong Chesaba Makha Leikai, Kakching district on Saturday.
During the visit, the team found that the madrassa has only one room in which classes for students from class I to V are being jointly conducted under the tutelage of two teachers.
The single room was also found to be used as staffroom for teachers.
The madrassa was also found lacking toilet and mess room.
Speaking to media persons regarding the visit, PSO, Manipur finance secretary Yumkhaibam Asgar expressed concern over the condition of the madrassa under ZEO Zone III Thoubal, which has an enrolment of more than 80 students, and raised questions as to whether government's School Fagathansi Mission exists only on paper.
He claimed that PSO, Manipur from 2008 has been campaigning for improvement in education sector but the past governments and Education Department officials had only implemented superficial measures with no real intention of developing high quality education sector in the state.
Asgar also alleged that construction of infrastructure for schools under SSA and RMSA are executed every year but witnessing the present situation of the madrassa raised poser whether such projects are only taken up in schools where there is prospect for lucrative contracts.
Drawing the attention of the Governor, Education (S) Department and Kakching deputy commissioner towards the present condition of the madrassa, he cautioned that the required teachers and infrastructure for the school should be filled up or they will launch an agitation.
One of the guardians present during the visit, demanded that the Governor, Education Department and district administration should send required teachers and improve the infrastructure of the madrassa, warning that if the demands are not fulfilled, then the school management committee and guardian committee will extend their support to the agitation led by PSO, Manipur on the issue.
