Imphal, November 17 2025:
Six student organisations (AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK & AIMS) have pushed for the adoption of uniforms made from locally produced materials across schools and colleges of the State from the new upcoming session.
Speaking to media persons at DESAM Head Office in Keishampat today, Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei, spokesperson of the six student bodies and DESAM president shared that in order to implement this, they will launch an initiative to meet the authorities concerned and heads of private and Government schools and colleges to hold discussions before the commencement of the new session.
Saying that the student bodies have attempted to enforce the adoption of uniforms made from local materials/fabrics for a long time, he said it has never been fully implemented.
Though girl students from Class VIII to the college level wear "phaneks" as their uniform, a lot of them appear to be phanek-like products imported from other States.
Stating that phanek is a traditional attire which is locally made in abundance, he appealed to students to only buy such garments made in Manipur, adding that it will strengthen the State's economy.
