Yongchak Festival kicks off

The Two-Day Yongchak (Tree Bean) Festival-cum-Brainstorming event kicked off today at the CSIR-NEIST Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat drawing attention to the enduring place of Yongchak in the food culture, social life, and cultural identity of Manipur.
Five stalls participated in the two-day Tree Bean Festival.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur; Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH); Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA); Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur; Dhanamanjuri University; CSIR-NEIST, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, Lamphelpat; and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur.

The opening ceremony was graced by Dr Lorho S Pfoze, former MP (Lok Sabha), Outer Manipur, as the chief guest.
The function was presided over by Dr H Birkumar Singh, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NEIST Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, as the president.
The programme was also attended by distinguished guests of honour, including Dr T Brajakumar Singh, Director, Department of Environment & Climate Change; Professor Irengbam Meghachandra Singh, College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University; Dr S Basanta Singh, ARS, Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre; Dr S Manikanta, retired Mission Director, RHM; and Dr Kh Somorendro Singh, retired DG, ICM.
The inaugural programme included the welcome address by Dr Atom Sunil Singh, Director, AIMS, and the keynote address by Dr Thangjam Robert, MU.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Lorho S Pfoze spoke about the medicinal value of tree-beans as shared by experts and the impact of climate change and pests which reduces their life-span.
The opening day also marked the beginning of the brainstorming sessions under the two-day programme.
The discussions are intended to provide a common platform for reflection on Yongchak as an important part of Manipur's heritage, food traditions, and public life, while encouraging wider engagement.
