Dimasa Students' Union opposes bid to bifurcate Dima Hasao

Imphal, February 17 2026: The Dimasa Students' Union (DSU) has strongly opposed the recent demand for bifurcation of Dima Hasao district along communal lines, terming the proposal "antipeople", divisive and contrary to the historical and cultural identity" of the indigenous tribal communities of the district.

In a press release issued by its Central Committee, the union condemned the reported proposal allegedly raised by the indigenous People's Forum seeking division of the hill district.

The DSU asserted that Dima Hasao has long stood as a symbol of unity, peaceful coexistence and shared heritage among diverse tribes and communities, and warned that any attempt to divide the district for narrow political interests would disturb long-standing harmony and create unnecessary tension among communities.

The union also expressed concern over reported closed-door discussions with a Minister of the Government of Assam regarding the sensitive issue.

It maintained that matters of such importance must be addressed through transparency and inclusive dialogue.

The DSU cautioned that if the Government of Assam proceeds to entertain or implement the demand without proper consultation and public discourse, the union, along with other tribal organisations, would be compelled to launch a mass democratic movement to safeguard the unity, integrity and rights of the indigenous tribal communities.
