135th Patriots' Day solemnly observed across Manipur, Tripura and Assam

Bpr/Kak/Tbl/Cdl/Spt/Jbm, August 13 2026: The 135th Patriots' Day was observed across Manipur and in parts of Tripura and Assam on Thursday with solemn tributes to Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal, who made the supreme sacrifice during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 in defence of the sovereignty and freedom of Manipur.

BISHNUPUR

The District Administration Bishnupur observed the day at the Conference Hall of the DC Office, Mini Secretariat Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam led officials in paying floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

ADC Toijam Opendro and District Level Officers also attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the forefathers and urged officials to uphold their legacy through sincere and committed public service.

Prabhat Pheris were also organised across Nambol, Bishnupur and Moirang SubDivisions, while line departments observed the day at their respective offices.

At the INA Auditorium, Moirang, Patriots' Day was observed alongside a patriotic song competition organised by Team Prithviraj under the initiative of former Moirang MLA Prithviraj Mairembam.

The event commenced with paying floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

As many as 58 students from schools across Moirang AC participated in the patriotic song competition.

K Viswaraj of LCM School secured the first position, followed by Malemnganba Phairembam of Little Bird School in second and Haobijam Arvind of LCM School in third position.

DPUVO Nambol also observed the day with poetry and patriotic song competitions involving 29 students in two categories.

Observances were also held at the Moirang MLA Office organised by the National People'sYouth Front (NPYF), Moirang Block; SDO Office, Nambol, jointly organised by the SDO Nambol and the Indian Red Cross Society, Bishnupur District Branch; and at Moirang Turenbal Leikai Mandop, organised by MAMPIL .

KAKCHING

The main observance in Kakching district was organised by the District Administration at the Deputy Commissioner's Office Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Angeline Renita R led officials in paying floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Superintendent of Police Priyadarshini Laishram, officers and staff of the DC Office and DLOs also paid tributes.

A two-minute silence was observed in honour of the martyrs.

Patriots' Day was also observed at schools under the Zonal Education Office and various government offices in the district.

At Wabagai, the Wabagai Youth Committee organised a bike rally on the theme, "Save Manipur, Drugs Free Manipur, Drug Free Wabagai.

Save Youths." The rally, which began at Sekmaijin, covered various parts of the constituency before culminating at the residence of MPCC Manipur OBC Department chairman Md Sakir Ahmed.

Participants also paid tribute to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Wabagai Higher Secondary School also observed the day jointly with the Punjab National Bank Rural Self Employment Training Institute, Kakching, under the initiative of the Ministry of Rural Development.

An inter-school recitation and dance competition was held as part of the programme.

THOUBAL

At Thoubal, the main observance was held at the Election Counting Hall of the DC Office Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Yumnam Robita led officials in paying floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

The DC said Patriots' Day commemorates the sacrifices of the brave forefathers who defended the motherland and specifically recalled the execution of Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal on August 13, 1891.She urged people to emulate their courage and dedication towards the motherland.

ADM Aribam Sharma, Commanding Officer of 3rd IRB Sarangthem Hemanta and Thoubal Zilla Parishad CEO P Shantikumar Singh were among those present.

The Md Alimuddin Memorial Public Charitable Trust also observed the day at the residence of former Chief Minister Md Alimuddin.

Floral tributes were offered to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, former Chief Minister Alimuddin and former MP Yumnam Yaima.

Speaking on the occasion, former Minister O Joy recalled the efforts of former Chief Minister Alimuddin after Manipur attained statehood in 1972 to ensure that Patriots' Day was observed in remembrance of the martyrs.

Several schools and colleges across Thoubal district also observed the day, including Sofia English School, Vision Creative School of Science, YK College Wangjing, RUDA Academy, AG Memorial Academy, Brighter Public School and others.

Students and participants paid floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Pukhrambam Kajao.

The Performing Arts & Cultural Evolution (PEACE) also observed Patriots' Day.

CHANDEL

The District Administration Chandel held the 135th Patriots' Day at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the DC Office Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Mamoni Doley led the floral tribute ceremony.

The DC paid homage to Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal describing their courage, patriotism and sacrifice as an enduring source of inspiration.

She called upon people to strengthen mutual understanding and work collectively for peace, harmony and progress.

SENAPATI

The District Administration Senapati observed the day at the NIC Video Conferencing Room of the DC Office.

Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S led officials in paying floral tributes to General Thangal and Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh.

SDOs and DLOs also paid tributes to the two revered heroes.

A separate Patriots' Day observance was held at General Thangal Ecological Park, Mayangkhang, to honour the courage and sacrifice of the two patriots.

Naga Peoples' Organisation president Kuba Peter attended the programme as chief guest, while Poumai Naga Union president RB Pani was the guest of honour and Thangal Union president RK Philip presided over the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Kuba Peter described Patriots' Day as an important occasion that should be taught to the younger generation so that they understand the supreme sacrifice made by Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal in resisting British rule.

Before the formal programme, dignitaries, tribal leaders, religious leaders and others laid wreaths at the statues of General Thangal and Charai Thangal at the park.

Mayangkhang youths also presented a traditional gun salute.

M Ningthoupham Women Society presented a Thangal folk song, while Makeng Cheijinba Youth presented a choreography as part of the commemorative programme.

JIRIBAM

In Jiribam, the District Administration observed Patriots' Day at the DC Office Complex.

Deputy Commissioner Arvind Hanglem led officers and staff in paying floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Elangbam Amuthoi, SDOs, DLOs and other officials attended.

The 135th Patriots' Day Observation Committee also organised a programme at Ningshingkhul Biodiversity Park.

Addressing the gathering, DC Arvind Hanglem urged students to draw inspiration from the ideals and values of the forefathers and become responsible citizens who contribute to society.

TRIPURA

In Tripura, the 135th Patriots' Day was observed at several places to honour Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal and remember their sacrifices for the freedom of Manipur.

At Berimura, Bamuti, a solemn tribute ceremony was held at the statue of Bir Tikendrajit, followed by a public meeting at Nijur Bhavan in Kamalpur, Dhalai district.

The programme was jointly organised by the Kamalpur Manipuri Youth Association, Tripura; Tripura Manipuri Students' Youth Coordination Committee; Manipuri Council, Tripura; All Manipuri Students' Association; and United Peoples' Front, Manipur (UPF).

Kh Ratan, advisor of UPF, attended the programme as chief guest.

Speakers and participants paid tribute to the patriots who sacrificed their lives in defence of Manipur during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.Meanwhile, in Agartala, the Manipuri Literary and Cultural Forum and Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society jointly organised an observance and paid floral tributes to the martyrs.

ASSAM

The 135th Patriots' Day was observed at Jaribond Konung Leikai in Assam.

The programme began with the hoisting of the flag and a bike rally involving youths, followed by floral tributes to the Manipuri freedom fighters.

Social activist Bikash Singha, Hailakandi-121 constituency MLA Dr Milan Das, Manipur Sahitya Parishad Assam president Dr Ph Birmani and Manipur Language Board member Kh Birola attended the programme.

Lala Rural College Asst Professor Salam Debhari and Rabindrasadan Girls' College, Sribhumi, Asst Professor Dr Memchaton spoke on the lives and contributions of the Manipuri freedom fighters.

A similar observance was held at Khat Khati, Bokajanda in Karbi Anglong district, jointly organised by the Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Brahmaputra Valley and its Khat Khati branch.

The observations across the region recalled the courage, patriotism and supreme sacrifice of the martyrs of 1891, while calling upon the younger generation to uphold the values of unity, integrity and respect for the land and its heritage.
