AMYPCO demands deferral of census in Manipur amid influx concerns

Imphal, March 13 2026: The All Manipur Youth Protection Committee (AMYPCO) has appealed to the Government to postpone the upcoming census process in Manipur until all illegal immigrants are identified and the prevailing law & order situation is stabilized.

In a press release, AMYPCO emphasized that while they do not oppose the census in principle, proceeding with it under the current circumstances is unacceptable to the people of Manipur.

The committee highlighted several critical issues facing the State, including the ongoing law and order crisis, the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), restrictions on movement between communities, and the significant challenge posed by illegal influx.

AMYPCO warned that pushing ahead with the census could exacerbate the instability and ongoing conflict in Manipur.

The committee called upon political leaders to heed the long-standing demands of the local populace and act decisively while there is still time.

The committee stressed that failure to address these concerns now, before "outsiders" gain significant political and economic power, would have severe consequences for future generations.

AMYPCO demanded that the Manipur Government take a resolution during the ongoing Assembly Session to defer the census and write to the Central Government regarding the matter.

The committee proposed using mechanisms like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to properly identify non-locals first.

AMYPCO also pledged its full support and participation in any future public movements initiated by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) regarding this issue.
