Addressing the gathering, Dr N Bino Singh stressed that preventing hearing impairment among children is a shared responsibility of the Health Department, Education Department, parents and the community.
He said timely detection and intervention are essential to ensure that no child is deprived of the opportunity to learn and succeed because of hearing problems.
Noting that World Hearing Day is observed every year to raise awareness, he urged parents and teachers to closely monitor children's hearing ability from an early age.
If any symptoms of hearing impairment are detected, prompt medical attention and appropriate intervention should be sought to prevent permanent hearing loss.
Stating that the loss of a child's hearing also represents a loss to society, Dr Bino called for collective efforts to identify and address hearing problems at the earliest stage so that every child can enjoy a healthy and productive future.
