Bishnupur, January 10 2026:
Strongly opposing the VB-G RAM G Act, the "MGNREGA Bachao Sangram" campaign was launched today during press conferences held at Oinam in Bishnupur and Hayellabuk in Thoubal district.
The Indian National Congress' Nation-wide campaign aims to advocate for the repeal of the new Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission-Gramin 2025, and reinstate the original MGNREGA, 2005 .
The press conference at Bishnupur was conducted at the residence of former MLA of Oinam AC L Radhakishore and organised by the Bishnupur District Congress Committee under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
Other dignitaries present at the press conference include Moirang AC former MLA P Sharatchandra Singh; social activist Moirangthem Meghachandra and Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee president Wahengbam Anand.
Speaking at the gathering, L Radhakishore expressed discontent with the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name in the newly amended Act.
Further, he highlighted the cost-sharing ratio from 90:10 with the Centre bearing 90% of the unskilled wage costs and the State bearing 10% under MGNREGA .
This has been shifted to 60:40 (Centre: State) under the VB-G RAM R Act.
Under this new framework, poorer States will be unable to bear the mandated costs, results in rural workers being deprived of waged employment.
Thus, he demanded revocation of the new Act and vehemently opposed the elimination "Mahatma Gandhi" from its name.
At Thoubal, the conference was organised by Thoubal District Congress Committee and witnessed the attendance of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson and MPCC Minority Department chairman Y Zakir Hussain; DCC Thoubal working president Md Manouwar Ali; MPCC Fishermen Congress chairman Okram Bishambhor Singh; Wangkhem Block Congress Committee president Alhaj Keramad Ali among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Y Zakir Hussain termed the replacement of MGNREGA with the VB-G RAM G Act as unfortunate.
Saying that amendments in the new Act violates peoples' rights and does not serve the interests of poor citizens, he demanded withdrawal of the VB-G RAM G Act.
At the press conference, Y Zakir also distributed pamphlets to spread awareness about the "MGNREGA Bachao Sangram" .
