YOUTH AFFAIRS and Sports and IFCD Minister, Nongthonbam Biren today visited Chandel Christian village ground where the District Sports Complex is being constructed to take stock of the progress made in the construction.
The Chandel District Sports Complex is being constructed as part of the present SPF government's plans for constructing sports complexes in all the hill districts of the state.
On the tour of inspection of the construction of the Chandel District Sports Complex, Sports Minister Biren was accompanied by Director, Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Boby Waikhom, other officials of YAS and IFCD.
Speaking to media persons, Minister Biren informed that 12.99 acres of land was donated by the Chandel Christian village for the construction of the Sports Complex.
He thanked the villagers for donating the land.
He told reporters that the District Sports Complex was being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crores under the Special Plan Assistance (SPA).
The Manipur Development Society (MDS) was taking the responsibility for construction works.
Construction is expected to be completed within 2010.Initially, Rs 4.9 crore has been sanctioned for 2007-08 and with that amount, the construction has begun.
He said, for the second phase, a sum of Rs 5 crore is about to be released for 2008-09. The sports complex will have a capacity of 3,100 seats, an eight-lane track in the main stadium, VIP and public galleries, indoor stadium, basket ball court, boys' and girls' hostels, staff quaters, practice field and administrative building.
Minister Biren appealed to the people of the district to look after the complex as their own.
