Students sensitised on Sangai conservation at Nambol school

Nambol, August 08 2026: A one-day school students' sensitisation programme on Sangai Day was organised at Bethel School, Nambol Chingmang, on Saturday to raise awareness among students about the Sangai deer (Rucervus eldii eldii), its habitat, cultural significance and conservation.

The programme was attended by Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur president Dr Khangembam Shamungou, retired DM College of Science professor Dr Kh Rajmani and SfF vice-president K Jugeshor as presidium members, said SfF in a statement.

Delivering the keynote address, Jugeshor stressed the importance of creating awareness among young minds about the Sangai and encouraging their participation in conservation efforts.

He also spoke about the Sangai and Keibul Lamjao National Park, its only natural habitat.

Dr Shamungou highlighted the distinctive anatomical features, cultural identity and heritage of the Sangai, besides discussing habitat destruction and the changing environmental conditions of Keibul Lamjao National Park.

Dr Rajmani expressed concern over the declining population of the State Animal due to habitat loss, poaching and increasing human disturbance, and called for collective conservation efforts.

A significant highlight of the programme was the participation of Konsam Roshika and Lanthoibi Konsam of Class IX, who delivered speeches on the Sangai and environmental conservation.

A set of books authored by Dr Shamungou was also donated to the school library to encourage further learning and research on the Sangai and its habitat.

A spot written quiz on the Sangai and environmental conservation was conducted with 50 students participating.

Seven winners were selected and will be felicitated during the 3rd Sangai Day Celebration on December 10.The programme concluded with a pledge by the students and participants to protect the Sangai and conserve its unique wetland habitat.
