Imphal, September 07 2025:
Palem Panthou Cultural Trust (PPCT) celebrated its 9th Foundation Day at the auditorium of Manipur Dramatic Union in Yaiskul Police Lane, Imphal today.
The celebration was graced by dignitaries, including Dr RK Nayansana Devi, former Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board; Dr Kshetrimayum Subhadhani Devi, president, Mahila Kavya Manch; and cultural activist Dr Elangbam Amitkumar Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Amitkumar said that Manipuri theatre holds a unique and prominent position due to its distinct traditions, such as Sumang Lila, and its evolution from religious and folk rituals to modem, politically-aware drama.
He asserted that internationally acclaimed theatre artists like Ratan Thiyam and Heisnam Kanhailal have achieved global recognition for their innovative work, which often blends local Manipuri traditions with universal themes of conflict, identity, and human suffering.
"Artists play a critical role in preserving, popularizing, and promoting Manipur's diverse performing arts & culture", said Dr Amitkumar while calling for greater governmental support for artists.
During the event, Sangeet Natak Akademi awardees Ranjeet Chingtham (Performing Arts, Thang-Ta) and Dr Y Sadananda, director of Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory (Mime Theatre) were felicitated.
